After a fun first day in the desert I decided to tone things down for a couple days, work on a paper and wander the town a bit. As I mentioned in my initial (slightly romanticized) description of Siwa, there were beautiful fortress ruins in the heart of town, just begging to be explored...
these ruins were up on one of the natural cliffs, providing an exceptional view of the palm groves, rocky hills, and oasis town
it was a little eerie exploring alone... I didn't run into anyone the whole time I was there
but the sights were incredible...
I could even see the ancient tombs off in the distance
and I did catch this gorgeous cat napping... what a beaut, eh?
After exploring the fortress of Shali, I continued my wandering around town...
Here's a glimpse of the oasis in the distance... it's a lake really, it's huge!
and of course I had to capture the common transport...
the market stalls with their fresh local organics...
and the children at play
